YOUNG AMERICANS MURALS ON THE HISTORIC DAVID T HOWARD BUILDING

It’s an honor and a pleasure to know that the Atlanta Public Schools will restore and preserve the Young Americans murals in the re-opening of the David T Howard School. The school is located in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood in Atlanta Georgia.

David T. Howard, donated the land for the school that bore his name, was born in 1849 as a slave. Howard became a free man after the Civil War, and he used $200 inherited from his father to start anew. Howard worked as a railroad porter in Atlanta before becoming an undertaker, with his mortuary business eventually making him one of the city’s first black millionaires. He was a founder of the city’s first black-owned bank, Atlanta State Savings Bank, and he died in 1935. Source: Historian Nasir Muhammad
